Let's talk about

rice in Africa

The Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI) project

The Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI) project was launched in 2013. It is part of the program Agricultural Value Chains for Sustainable Development (A4SD) and is currently being implemented in four African countries. The goal of CARI is to significantly improve the livelihoods of rice farmers (30% female) and to increase the competitiveness of the domestic rice supply.

Why we focus on rice

Rice is one of the most important staple crops in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in West Africa. In the past decades, demand for rice in the region has been growing faster than anywhere else in the world. These increases in demand cannot be met by local or regional production, up to 40 % of Rice is imported from Asia. Lower processing and marketing infrastructure, missing access to high quality inputs as well as weaker markets disadvantage local production systems.

Smallholder farmers often face poverty and hunger. To support a world without hunger by 2030 these farmers, both male and female, need to be front and center in all our activities.
We work in Burkina Faso, Nigeria and Tanzania.

Our approach

The Competitive African Rice Initiative (CARI) was commissioned to significantly improve the livelihoods of smallholder rice farmers and their families by increasing the competitiveness of domestic rice. CARI’s technical and financial assistance is based on a value chain approach. The principal aim is to foster linkages amongst rice value chain actors, and as a result, create win-win situations for all stakeholders.

CARI is mainstreaming sustainability by following the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) Standard.
